Declutter Your Stuff
The first step to declutter your car is to remove all the “stuff” you have in your car. This includes jackets, books, sporting equipment, tools, etc. Any item in your car that belongs in either the house or garage take it out and put it in its rightful place. Be frugal with this part of the decluttering process and don’t get attached to your stuff. You don’t need three extra jackets and two soccer balls in your car. Keep items in your car based on your own needs, but if you don’t use it on a daily basis take it out. For example, if you live somewhere cold it makes sense to keep one extra jacket in the car. But having three textbooks from your previous semester of college in your car just takes up space.Organize Important Papers
This step is probably put off the most. We’re all guilty of collecting receipts and coupons in our glove box over the year only to wind up with a mountain of expired coupons and old receipts. Take a quick glance to make sure there’s nothing important you need in there, but then toss it all out. If you like to keep your receipts store them in an envelope in your house to rid of some of the clutter. Once you’ve gotten rid of all the trash, find your important documents such as your registration, insurance, and owner’s manual. It’s a good idea to store these in your glove box or console for safe keeping.Deep Clean
Now that you’ve cleared the clutter it’s time to clean your car. Whether you take it to a car wash or do it yourself, be sure to give it a good vacuuming as well. Get under the seats and all around. It helps a lot if you move the seats back and forth to get all the nooks and crannies. A great tip to keep your car smelling fresh after a vacuum is to add dryer sheets under the seats. You’ll also want to wipe down the inside of your car with some car wipes or baby wipes. And if you have kids or a dog you’ll probably want to wipe down the windows with window/glass cleaner. There are many options for a deep car cleaning such as cleaning leather seats or getting the carpets cleaned. I recommend you at least vacuum and wipe down your car, but you can do as much or as little as you want.Prevent Clutter
The best tip I can give for decluttering your car is to prevent as much of the clutter as possible. Here’s a few easy ways to do so…Plug the “black hole.”
A lot of the mess is usually underneath the front seats of your car from dropping french-fries or loose change down the opening between your seats and the console. You can cover it with the Drop Stop or make a DIY version with a pool noodle by cutting a small strip of it to fit in the opening.Cup holder hack.
Add silicone cupcake liners to your cup holders for easy clean up. It’ll catch all the crumbs and anything sticky, so your cup holders stay clean. If you want to reuse the silicone liners they’re easy to clean, too.
